Overview
In the 3-day course “WASH in Emergencies” you will receive a comprehensive overview on the field of WASH in humanitarian and transitional assistance, technical and non-technical options of intervention as well as specifics and challenges in the WASH sector. The course covers the basics of humanitarian assistance in the WASH sector, including the related humanitarian principles and WASH standards. Approaches and technologies for water, sanitation and hygiene provision in humanitarian crisis settings will be presented. WASH-specific project planning approaches and cooperation structures in humanitarian aid will be discussed. Experienced speakers from the German WASH network and external experts will give technical inputs and contribute up-to-date practical examples to the course.
The training is part of aha’s certification scheme and can be credited towards our Certificate of Advanced Studies.

Lecturers
Lorenz Ewers
Lorenz Ewers heads Arche Nova’s Operational Excellence and Innovation Department, which supports the quality, technical coherence and continuous improvement of the organization’s international WASH interventions. He has extensive practical experience in emergency response, WASH, humanitarian logistics, capacity development, disaster risk reduction, and coordination in contexts including Bosnia and Herzegovina, Nepal, Ecuador, and Indonesia. He has designed, coordinated, and facilitated WASH in Emergencies courses in Germany and regional training programmes internationally. Lorenz is a co-author of the Compendium of Water Supply Technologies in Emergencies, the Compendium of Hygiene Promotion in Emergencies and the 2025 Compendium of Solid Waste Management in Humanitarian Contexts.
Robert “Rob” Gensch
Rob Gensch is a Senior WASH Expert at the German Toilet Organization (GTO). He has extensive experience in humanitarian and development WASH, with a particular focus on sanitation, hygiene promotion, and behaviour change. He has worked with and supported WASH partners across Asia, MENA, and Sub-Saharan Africa and his current focal areas are WASH capacity strengthening and global WASH knowledge management. Rob has coordinated and co-authored the WASH in Emergencies compendium series, which currently comprises four volumes on sanitation, water supply, hygiene promotion, and solid waste management. He is currently also co-leading the development of a sector-wide, AI-powered WASH knowledge management platform.
