Climate-related hazards like floods, droughts, and heatwaves increasingly threaten water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services globally. Vulnerable communities face worsening water scarcity, infrastructure damage, and health risks as climate variability intensifies.

This interactive online training equips participants with both a solid understanding of climate change impacts on WASH and practical skills to assess risks, apply adaptation strategies, and develop actionable plans to build climate-resilient WASH programs. It includes contextual exercises based on real-world scenarios from diverse contexts. Through case studies, peer exchange, group discussions, and hands-on exercises, participants will gain skills and get to know tools to effectively integrate climate adaptation into their WASH projects. Additional inputs from selected countries will provide further insights into technical and practical aspects.

Participants will receive a pre-training questionnaire to tailor sessions according to their experience and knowledge. The training emphasizes peer learning, diverse perspectives, and practical application to enhance climate resilience in WASH interventions.

While prior participation in the course “Introduction to Main Concepts and Terminologies in Climate Change Adaptation” is advisable, it is not required. A basic understanding of climate change and humanitarian WASH programming is helpful. If you are interested in gaining credit towards a Certificate of Advanced Studies, you may combine this course with the introductory course and another specific CCA course from aha, under prerequisite of passing the exam in form of individual work after completion of all courses (please also see the aha general exam regulation).

Negative environmental effects can undermine humanitarian outcomes, slow disaster recovery, and harm affected communities. While Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) are a proven method for predicting and improving the environmental consequences of projects, traditional EIA approaches are often too complex, costly, and time-consuming for the realities of humanitarian operations.

How do images influence our perception of people in the Global South? Which stereotypes and narratives are frequently (unconsciously) reinforced by commonly used images in humanitarian aid communication—and what alternatives are available?

In this interactive workshop, we critically examine the role of visual language in humanitarian aid and development cooperation. Together, we will reflect on colonial continuities and the concept of “white saviorism”, and develop concrete, non-discriminatory alternatives for the visual representation of projects.

The aim is to support organizations in making their communication ethical, dignified, and diversity-sensitive – and thus positioning themselves credibly in a postcolonial context.

The Humanitarian Carbon Calculator is a useful tool to allow humanitarian agencies to calculate, and thereby systematically reduce, their carbon emissions.

This course will enable you to confidently use the calculator to track the greenhouse gas emissions from their organization. This can be a starting point for transformation in your organisations leading towards climate neutrality. The training is a combination of interactive lectures, group work, practical activities and self-directed ‘homework‘ that will help you develop the skills needed to calculate carbon emissions in their own organisations. Using real-world examples and your own projects and examples the course will explore the steps needed to understand and reduce carbon emissions within the operational realities of humanitarian settings.

The main course objective is to provide a basic understanding of the significance of gender in security management and the negative consequences for everyone’s safety and security when gender is not considered.

Through interactive learning methods and practical case studies, humanitarian professionals and security managers will examine essential gender concepts, and how gender impacts different aspects of security management, from risk analyses and security policies to incident reporting mechanisms. The course will further delve into how gender and other intersectional considerations are integral to security management, for both individual and organisational security, particularly in fragile deployment environments. Then it will explore how gender can (and should) be mainstreamed into organisations’ security planning. Further, the course will look at how inclusive organisational cultures promote safety and security for all, incl. through safe incident reporting mechanisms and stress and trauma-informed team dynamics.

The course would be conducted online on two half days (with a break in between as reflection time).

The “Humanitarian action all-round: foundations, challenges, trends” training course offers you a comprehensive and hands-on introduction to contemporary humanitarian action. Spanning over 6 training days of around 4.5 hours each and 15 online thematic sessions, the course curriculum covers the ideological, legal, practical, and institutional foundations of Western humanitarianism; key policy frameworks and their implementation aspects; as well as cross-cutting issue areas of humanitarian action like gender or climate.

The course aims to complement theory with practical examples provided by guest speakers who have relevant work experience (shared, for instance, in the “deep dive” format). Furthermore, the course offers you a critical perspective and includes a variety of interactive and participatory methods, including group discussions and case studies which take into account the current developments within the sector. In addition to dedicated sessions, the course aims to consider power dynamics with respect to all its content and this way seeks to avoid reproducing inequalities and the problematic knowledge gaps within the sector.

This training is supported by Aktion Deutschland Hilft e.V.

This training is organized by the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict.
